Going back to old firm?

How do people go about this if you haven’t stayed connected? I left a PE firm voluntarily for a new opportunity, but for a variety of reasons, I may want to go back. I was a strong performer but it probably rubbed some people the wrong way when I left (good terms but firm was always a little weird about people leaving). Anyone found any success with this?

Reconnecting with your old firm after leaving can be tricky, especially if you haven't stayed in touch. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps to consider:

  1. Leverage Your Network: Even if you haven't stayed connected with the firm directly, you likely know people from your analyst or associate classes who are still in touch with the firm. Reach out to them to get a sense of the firm's current dynamics and whether they'd be open to rehiring former employees.

  2. Rebuild Relationships: Start by reaching out to former colleagues or mentors at the firm. Acknowledge your departure and express genuine interest in reconnecting. Be transparent about why you're considering returning and how your experience since leaving has made you a stronger candidate.

  3. Address Concerns Proactively: If you suspect your departure may have left a sour taste, address it head-on. Highlight that leaving was a tough decision but one you felt was necessary for your growth at the time. Emphasize your respect for the firm and your desire to contribute again.

  4. Engage Headhunters: If direct outreach feels too awkward, consider using headhunters who have relationships with the firm. They can act as intermediaries and gauge interest on your behalf.

  5. Be Prepared for a Step Back: Depending on how long you've been away and the firm's policies, you might not return at the same level. For example, one WSO thread mentions someone returning to PE after 1.5 years at a startup and coming back at the same level they left. Be open to this possibility and focus on the long-term benefits.

  6. Timing and Economic Environment: The current hiring climate can also play a role. If the firm is actively hiring or has a need for someone with your skill set, it could work in your favor.

Ultimately, success depends on how well you can rebuild trust and demonstrate the value you bring to the table.
