GP Stakes SA (Interview soon pls help)

Just got an invitation to a GP Stakes summer analyst interview and was wondering if anyone has any resources/advice for preparing. Have interviewed for secondaries related role before so have some technical knowledge and have been trying to read as many GP Stakes industry reports on it as possible but scared I am missing something.

Any help or advice at all would be super appreciated. Thx

For a GP Stakes summer analyst interview, preparation is key, and it’s great that you’ve already started diving into industry reports. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some targeted tips to help you prepare:

1. Understand the Revenue Streams in GP Stakes

  • Familiarize yourself with the three main revenue streams:
    • Management Fee Earnings
    • Carried Interest
    • GP Investment Income
  • Be ready to discuss how these revenue streams impact the valuation and performance of a GP Stakes investment.

2. Modeling Knowledge

  • If you have access to Excel templates or resources, practice building models that analyze investment opportunities in PE funds. Focus on:
    • Valuation methodologies (DCF, comps, etc.)
    • Metrics specific to GP Stakes investments.
  • If you’re unsure about modeling alternative asset managers, consider reviewing any available templates or guides to strengthen your understanding.

3. Behavioral and Situational Questions

  • Be prepared to discuss your strengths and weaknesses through internships, projects, or clubs you’ve listed on your resume.
  • Practice answering situational questions like:
    • What would you do if you found a mistake in a presentation right before a client meeting?
    • How would you prioritize tasks if given multiple assignments at once?

4. Industry Knowledge

  • Stay updated on the latest trends in the GP Stakes space. Reading business news daily (e.g., WSJ, Barron’s, FT) can help you stay informed.
  • If possible, follow LinkedIn groups or forums that discuss GP Stakes or private equity trends.

5. Networking and Informational Interviews

  • If you haven’t already, reach out to professionals in the GP Stakes space for informational interviews. Ask about their experiences, challenges, and advice for excelling in the role.

6. General Interview Prep

  • Know your resume inside and out. Be ready to explain every detail, especially anything related to finance or valuation.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before the interview to ensure you’re sharp and focused.

7. Confidence in Your Technical Knowledge

  • Since you’ve interviewed for a secondaries-related role before, leverage that experience. Highlight your technical knowledge and how it applies to GP Stakes.

Good luck with your interview! You’ve got this!
