GPA / Transcripts for PE
Wondering if anyone has had experience with PE firms asking for GPA verification. I'm at GS/JPM/MS and have always only had my major GPA and SAT score (both pretty good) on my resume, and never my overall GPA (atrocious). Since a lot of PE firms have GPA minimums, I'm wondering if the majority actually request transcripts.
Get handy with Photoshop.
To my knowledge, MM firms do not, but not really sure about MFs
Whatever you do, don't cheat or lie, it could ruin your career. I'd just keep going with your Major GPA and if someone asks you your GPA you'll have to bite the bullet. If you're at a good bank and doing well I'm guessing you can get over a low GPA, though you won't be at a megafund --- but most people aren't.
I'd actually somewhat disagree with this point considering that's what people said about BBs in college, and I got offers at 3.
Wouldn't lie or cheat, just don't know if it's going to be the elephant in the room... or if it's not that big a deal.
Nothing I like more than an update like this...
Started a few months ago at a megafund and had several other offers in hand. Didn't lie or cheat... just wasn't an issue. Good deal experience, doing well in interviews, and crushing the model test can basically get you anywhere.
the chances of getting to a megafund are small even if you do lie AND don't get caught. Don't just compare the upside vs. downside - also compare the probabilities of the upside and downside.
I'd go with International Pymp's suggestion.
I am not even an investment banker yet, if that ever does occur, but I'd guess that if you do extremely well during your IB stint your GPA will be trumped by your experience/willingness to work hard
Awesome job dude! Great to see success stories like this.
^excellent. Glad you decided not to cheat or do anything stupid. Well done.
Concerned About Transcript Sent to PE Firm (Originally Posted: 02/14/2012)

Story:
I applied for an associate job at a relatively large growth equity firm. My resume included lots of non MBB management consulting experience (~4 years) and my education (relatively hard dual degree from non-target). However it did not include my relatively light GPA (>3.0, but 3.5) given my extensive WE.
Phone screen, day of interviews including fit and case work all went great and without any mention of GPA or even the notion of doing well in college (above and beyond asking about my double major).
They called me and told me they were either "very interested in me working there" or "wanted me to work there" (I forget which), but next steps include references, background check and transcripts. Everyone I talk to says that this is just a punch list before they extend an offer.
I am quite concerned that they are going to see the transcript and get jolted, potentially extending an offer to someone else.
Question 1: What are my odds of hearing back from them, and them saying there is an issue with my transcript (light grades)? a. 0% b. 20% c. 50% d. 80% e. 100%
Question 2: What should I do to mitigate any risk? a. My uncle's advice: "Don't say anything, and if it comes up, just say 'My WE speaks for itself." b. Proactive stance: Send an email or make call to my contact explaining that "the content of my academic record never came up, and to avoid any surprises, I wanted to let you know my GPA is X because of Y good reason" c. Indirect approach: Try and find a peer or closer contact to learn if everyone gets transcripts requested, etc.
Thanks!
Hey Bclan13 - I'd go ahead and not say anything. If they've taken such an interest in you so far, then you're in the clear. GPA is really only for getting the interview, anyway (based on my limited understanding). This would really only be an issue, anyway, if your GPA was under 3.0.
Good luck!
I'm still in college to let you know, but seriously if they said they want you to work there everything else they're asking for is just assurance they didn't make a mistake in their judgements. It's not like a GPA between 3-3.5 is bad at all, in fact I'd say it doesn't matter at all with your work experience (as you said). I wouldn't say anything - if your background check and references are good they aren't going to get bent out of shape at all if your GPA from OVER FOUR YEARS AGO is 0.2-0.3 points lower than what they may have expected from such a strong candidate
Follow up: I just had a conversation with my recruiter.
His comments:
In other words he said I should be in relatively good shape and i should follow my uncle's advice (a above).
Obviously I'm still worried, however I feel a little better.
