How to Break into PE from Undergrad as an international student?

Hi,

I’m an international student from the UK currently studying at a decent target school (the University of Pennsylvania) with a decent track record of placing internationals into private equity. Based on Penn’s career reports, a few international students from the School of Engineering have landed roles at firms like Silver Lake, KKR, etc., and I believe a few more have come through Wharton as well.

I’m aiming to break into PE straight from undergrad and would really appreciate any guidance on the best steps to position myself competitively. I’m aware this is of course a very challenging role to land, but believe that it is somewhere remotely close to the realm of possibility based on the career outcome reports.

A few questions I’d love insight on:

  • How critical are finance/pre-professional clubs at Penn? I’ve heard mixed takes — some say they’re essential, others that it’s still possible without them.
  • How much do major and GPA matter when it comes to PE recruiting out of undergrad?
  • What should I be doing to maximize my shot at top internships and hopefully convert?

Would especially appreciate thoughts from those who’ve gone through the process or seen international candidates succeed.

Thanks in advance!
