How to bridge the lack of deal experience ASAP?
Hey WSO, starting a new role at a MM PE fund in two months. My background is in ER and not in IB so while I’m able to model and analyze companies fairly well, I have zero deal experience. Lots of jargon I’m unaware of and truthfully, I don’t know what I don’t know when it comes to executing transactions (what does an associate actually do with regards to this?), and things like working with legal for example. Associates at the firm are given responsibility pretty early so I expect to lead my own workstreams pretty soon.
Is there any way I could bridge this gap in the two months I have or do I really just have to get exposed on the job and learn as I go? Just want to hit the ground running and minimize how much I’d need to play catchup.
They knew your background when they hired you. So much of PE is on the job learning but you can find some more technically oriented PE books to get used to some of the language / key process.
Once you start you can really dive into the last deal that your fund did. This will help you understand things that your firm cares about.
You are fucked. LMAO
If you know how to model, then you are fine assuming you are at a shop where you will be a model monkey. As long as you ask plenty of questions, especially regarding process, there shouldn’t be any issues.
It is very funny seeing people on this forum saying that PE is legitimately hard to do. It’s not, but the hours make it suck.
How do you find the learning curve in PE vs IB? I’m a first year analyst in a sector coverage team looking into possibly doing PE interviews soon
