How to communicate lateraling to firm

My firm is asking what I plan to do next - either stay with them, b school or go to another firm. I’m 9 months in but think I want to lateral to another fund in another city (they will support me with that). Is it stupid to be honest with them? Maybe we can comprise and I can WFH in that other city which would be win win

I would wait until your bonus is disbursed before informing them you are thinking of leaving seems silly to tell them before that (recognizing I don’t know your exact situation). Would just say still thinking about options but really enjoy the firm etc then tell them once your mind is made up/after bonus. Not really any upside for you saying anything early.

Why not just tell them you want to stay with them and operate in your own best interest to do what you want. It doesn’t benefit you to tell them you want to leave. It’ll only hurt you. They may let you go or give you a minimal, if any, bonus. Just keep your plans to yourself and do what you need to do. Unfortunately, when it comes to work; you need to be selfish about your career. No one else will care. Care about yourself first.
