How to pivot to IB/PE from Data/Tech with a low GPA? Canada Top Schools
I’m currently a final-year student at a top 3 Canadian uni (UofT/McGill/UBC) majoring in Math, Computer Science, and Statistics. My goal has always been IB or PE, but my GPA is currently sitting at a 2.7, which essentially locked me out of the standard recruiting cycles.
The Current Situation:
- Background: Strong technical foundation in Python, SQL, and quant modeling, but the GPA took a hit during the middle years.
- Immediate Path: I’m likely starting in a Data Science, Business Intelligence, or Tech role post-grad to build professional seasoning and a paycheck.
- Professional Development: I’m currently a CFA Level 1 candidate (writing in August) to signal interest and competence in finance.
The Long-Term Plan: I’m planning on a Master’s in Finance (MFin) or an MBA 3-4 years down the line to "reset" my GPA and pivot into high-finance. However, I’d love to make the move sooner if possible.
My Questions for the sub:
- Work Experience: Which "non-finance" roles are viewed most favorably by IB/PE recruiters? Should I aim for Data Science at a bank, or is a Big 4 Valuations/Advisory role a better stepping stone?
- CFA Weight: How much does passing CFA L1/L2 actually help in offsetting the GPA for someone with a Math/CS background?
- Networking: At this GPA level, I know OCR is dead for me. How should I approach networking as a "technical" candidate trying to break in laterally?
- Masters/MBA: For a Canadian pivot, is an MFin worth it, or should I just grind in tech and wait for a top-tier MBA?

Can’t speak for Canada much unfortunately, but a good thing to do (if you’re not already doing so) is trying to get coffee chats with as many people as possible, especially those at smaller firms without HR/ careers teams. The reasoning for the latter is that they can sometimes take you for an internship, sometimes unpaid but even better if they give you a stipend, and once you have that you can leverage that for OCs etc going forward. Not done it personally but seen non-target students without top GPAs land roles to eventually get into IB using this method; good luck!
