If I have an expertise in insurance, (Property & Casualty or Reinsurance, as an underwriting, risk management or valuation) can this be an useful expertise or experience for the Private Equity career?
Think it depends on the fund. From my experience (offshore reinsurance at a PE shop) people at the MFs tend to be more interested in people with life insurance knowledge due to the nature of their investments in the space. Additionally, roles I have chatted with tend to still value deal-based people with banking / PE backgrounds v. operators at the fund level.
Lots of FIG-focused funds invest into the P&C segment (think Flexpoint, Stone Point and White Mountains are mainly P&C investments) so there is certainly interest in the space.
Not to say it wouldn‘t be a useful skill set, think it might just be different than some shops are looking for. Have you considered a private credit role? Seems like a lot of those places that originate assets for insurers / provide strategic financing to them could be interested in your background
