Incoming at an MF: How to think like an investor?
Wrapping up my 2nd year in IB (RX) and heading to an MF. My modeling/techs are good, but I want to hit the desk thinking like an investor not like some execution monkey (even though that’s largely what I’ll be doing). How do you build real investing acumen?
Specifically looking for resources on asking good DD questions (e.g., being less passive in discussions) and evaluating investment opportunities non-quantitatively. Any books/guides/etc. would be super helpful. Thanks!
Imagine every dollar you have is about to get tied up in this deal and also every dollar your parents have and that if the deal goes bad they won’t be able to retire or move into a nice old folks home. You will all of a sudden be REALLY dialed in to make sure this is a good asset.
Run with that energy; it is your boss’s job to whittle that down to something good. As long as you can do the work and have that mentality, they will form you. You’ll ask retarded questions, you’ll raise your hand when you shouldn’t, but I would so prefer having to dial back a junior vs dial one up. One is refining something, the other is trying to create something that isn’t there.
It’s that simple. But going deeper and deeper into the ownership mentality takes a long time.
Caveat: YMMV, this is what worked for me plus a million other little psychological things, don’t @ me or reply or disagree, I am just giving an anecdote and don’t want to engage further on the topic.
This is literally me at my fund everyday. Great advice lol
Hasn't this been asked.... 1,000,000x on WSO previously? Is your search bar broken buddy?
I did a search and most of the threads were empty or the answers were not very helpful. Thanks for your input
