Industry Changes in P.E

I have the opportunity to work for the Private Equity team in a big investment management firm as a second year analyst... however this team focuses on Agriculture and Timber. My background thus far is Global Economic Strategy for investment management firms; so they were interested in me because of my skillset to help them with the due diligence part for their global deal flow, but I will also get good experience with modeling, deal flow, and everything PE day to day work. However, my main question is will working for a team that focuses on a specific niche hurt me in the long run (in terms of will I be stuck in this industry and if so, how are the prospects for PE in this agriculture industry)?

Sorry but want to clarify that I want to build a career in alternative investments; what specific route that is (real estate, opportunistic, private equity) that I am still trying to figure out.

At the junior levels industry specializations are generally not held against you when you try to go to another firm / industry / generalist firm. As long as your deals show you have a skillset that translates. It's when you get to the Senior Associate/VP role and you focus on an industry is when it makes it harder to switch. So go, do some deals, but focus on learning all the skills a generalist PE investor needs, and you'll be marketable for a lot of places in 2 years
