Infrastructure Carried interest vesting?

Hi all,

Looking to get into infrastructure PE. I know carried interest is a large part of comp, does anyone know how the vesting schedule works by strategy (infra, real estate, private credit)? I know PE will be 4-6 years on average, and I assume infrastructure is longer based on fund time horizon. Does anyone know anyone that works in this space or has intel by how long vesting period is and whether it is purely time based vs. investment realization based? Appreciate it

Based on the WSO Dataset, the vesting schedule for carried interest in infrastructure private equity (infra PE) tends to be longer than in traditional PE due to the extended holding periods typical of infrastructure assets. Here are some key points regarding infra PE carried interest vesting:

  1. Longer Vesting Periods: Infrastructure investments usually have longer horizons, often between 5-10 years, and sometimes extending to 12 years or more. This is reflective of the nature of the assets involved, such as toll roads, water utilities, or power plants, which are not quickly flipped.

  2. Vesting Schedule: The vesting of carried interest in infra PE can be aligned with these longer investment periods. While traditional PE might have a vesting period of 4-6 years, infra PE carried interest might not start to vest until later in the fund's life, potentially following a schedule that only begins to vest after several years into the fund.

  3. Vesting Structure: The structure can vary significantly between funds. Some might offer a gradual vesting schedule spread evenly across the life of the fund, while others might have back-end loaded schedules where the majority of the carry vests in the later years.

  4. Investment Realization vs. Time-Based Vesting: In infra PE, vesting can also be tied to the realization of investments, not just the passage of time. This means that carried interest might only vest as underlying assets are sold and profits are realized, which can add an additional layer of variability to when carried interest actually pays out.

Understanding these nuances is crucial if you're considering a career in infra PE, especially since the timing of potential payouts can significantly impact your financial planning and career decisions.
