Can anyone comment on comp / lifestyle / career progression in Chicago vs. "tier 1" cities like NYC and SF? Thanks
Top Chicago firms are very comparable to NYC/LA/SF UMM firms on both comp and lifestyle. Maybe better considering the massive COL differential.
Thanks - agree that Chicago COL is insanely good if you can stomach the winters. Any insight on how firms are currently viewing the political/corporate dynamics in the city? i.e. issues on crime, the latest mayoral election, several large corporates moving their headquarters?
I've been out of PE for almost a year so may be outdated... but largely think these are overplayed. City has gotten a bit less safe (more crime creeping into residential areas... but largely fine in the areas of offices and where you'd live) and I think things I with the mayoral election have cooled off... likely won't get worse than it already was with Lightfoot.
Wouldn't let it discourage or influence your view of the city IMO.
I recently moved back to the east coast from the city and will add some thoughts. I highly recommend either the Gold Coast or Old Town areas, as that was where it was the safest with the most going on. Happy to answer general questions about the city as well that could be helpful.
Now to your main question: Safety was never a big issue but the further north or south you go, it can be hit or miss. River North, Lakeview, Lincoln Park are also good areas but crime (I.e, car break ins and the occasional late night robbery) weren’t unheard of. Public transportation is convenient but depending on the area you are in and the time of day, safety can be a concern. Again, I never had any problems but plenty of bad experiences with homeless peeing / sleeping on trains, harassing people, etc. This past winter wasn’t terrible but the wind and general cold weather is as bad as advertised. The constant overcast weather and little sun from September - April can be really depressing at times as well. Overall, I enjoyed my experience but never saw myself living in Chicago more than 2-3 years after my analyst years. Political / corporate dynamics that you hear about on TV are real but a bit overblown and will likely negatively impact the city over the next decade or two. I don’t see any significant impact in the near-term that should deter you from moving to Chicago.
Tell me you go to Northwestern without telling me you go to Northwestern
Any insight on GTCR FS&T?
