Insurance PE

I’ve just started as an analyst at a small (300m Aum) fund. Focusing on ILS and insurance PE. It’s a strange split, I am one of two analysts and I spend half my time building forecasting/valuation models for our PE holdings and the other half doing quant work on portfolio simulation, optimisation etc for the ILS side. (I know quant and PE sounds ridiculous but hey that’s where I’m at). The PE portion is also fairly operationally heavy (fund director has taken up CEO position at one of the insurance firms).

Is there anyone that knows much about the insurance PE landscape? I’d like to know how valuable the skill set I am building is, given I am not starting in the typical FIG IB training ground. Just trying to build a picture of my exit ops given the niche nature of my starting point.

Background info: no deal experience so far, just ongoing valuations and ops for now.
