Is this a dumb idea ?
I'm trying to forge a connection with a player of the vc community. So far our communications have been minimal, basically him telling me that he will keep me in mind if his firm decides to bring on interns in the summer.
Ive been trying to keep thinking of excuses to email him, just so he does not forget. Would it be appropriate to ask him several, of what I consider to be reasonably intelligent questions about VC and the field ( I have tried to do extensive research and have read everything on VC that I could get my hands on including some very technical books) I would preface the email by saying that it is for a research paper for school, and that i could not find the relevant info elsewhere.
Is this a dumb idea, should i just ask for an informational interview?
I would just ask for the informational interview, because if he ask you what the research is all about the u will have to make up some more believable BS.
It's X-Mas. Do you understand? Lol.
obviously im not going to do this until next semester
What I was suggesting was an excuse to email him....
Ask him for an informational interview. It is a good excuse. Every single banker I was in touch (= replied to my emails) agreed for a short informational interview. This is a good excuse by itself.
I agree, shoot him an email in the new year. Say you hope he and his family had a great holiday. Then tell him over the holidays you were doing a good amount of reading about VC, even some technical material that has hard to decipher. Tell him you are interested to hear from a VC professional and would love to hear about his experiences and how he got into VC. Then ask him if he has some time in the next week or two if he would like to grab a cup of coffee or maybe lunch. Make it quick easy e-mail...rule of thumb is always make it easy to read on a BB. Good luck
Dude,
Guy's busy and has a job. All of this kind of stuff is pretty transparent and just an annoyance. Just occasionally send a "just wondering what's up" email. He will give a short polite reply and remember you want an internship.
Don't consume any more of his time with your "networking" than you have to.
Pike hit the point... rule of thumb is easy to read on a blackberry.
What do people do when waiting on line? On the elevator? Waiting for their order? Reading their BB/checking text messages.
If it's like an essay, they're just gonna skip over it and say "I'll read it when I have more time" and more often then not , they'll forget. If it's a short brief and to the point, you've got a good chance they'll reply right away.
