Attending m7 currently- any chance I can break into the Apollo/KKR summer asso program w/ no IB background? Pre-bschool I was working in finance related role (energy specifically). Chances are that I will be competing with folks that already had a couple IB experience?
I am not from the US, but from reading about the subject quite a bit your chances are basically 0 to go to a MF. Try to target LMM/MM firms or firms with an energy spin, you might have a better shot. Best of luck!
If you are female and you're at HBS, GSB, or maybe Wharton then I'd say you have an outside chance. If not, I would follow the advice of the poster above and target energy-focused LMM shops.
KKR's program is pretty diversity-focused, so if you're from a non-overrepresented background you may have a decent shot there from any of the M7 (I know people outside H/S who have done the internship). Otherwise it'll be super competitive. Apollo will be looking for more traditional finance backgrounds but since it sounds like you have a strong energy background you may have a shot at their energy group or one of their weirder PE groups (e.g. Hybrid Value). I believe they all recruit separately.
Got it thanks for the reply. I have a more energy+credit background- so based on what you and others said there is a shot for Apollo in their energy group without ib background ? thanks
Not really sure what exactly your pre-MBA role was, but I can’t imagine you’d have a good time at Apollo with no prior banking experience, energy group or not
Dont listen to the teenagers posting in here. I got interviews for one of those two summer internships and went a different direction. No IB experience, M7 MBA, non-diversity, not a trust fund kid... So odds are distinctly >0.
Nothing is impossible but I imagine it’ll be tough if you have little to no experience with financial modeling and structuring and executing deals etc. obviously these are things that you learn on the job but you likely won’t be capable to hit the ground running as well as your candidates with years of IB experience.
Give it a shot but don’t have too narrow of a focus in your recruiting.

Thx! That makes sense. Figure I would need IB exp to get into MF like kkr or Apollo even thou M7 is one of the target schools
No chance
So even if I have finance exp but I would need IB experience to break into a MF like kkr or Apollo ? Even for the summer program?
You proll need pre-MBA PE exp

are you retarded? You just admitted that you didnt get the jobs, which does nothing to change the replies' projected odds
I decided I wanted to do something else with my life and went with a different opportunity before I heard a decision from them.
