Leaving After ~1 Year Tips?

Title says all - Joined a buyout shop as a Sr. Associate last summer and job hasn't panned out the way I was hoping. Was approached about a corporate job that interested me and am moving towards the offer stage.

To anyone who has left a firm ~1 year after joining, any suggestions or advice? Believe my firm will be blindsided by this, so I'm anticipating some contentious reactions.

As someone who just put in their two weeks, I would advise you to just be honest/transparent (without being insulting) as to your rationale once you deliver the news.  Depending on the culture/personalities, reactions can range from fully supportive to combative.  People ultimately understand that you have to do right by yourself though.

A lot to that question, but to summarize -- i) Certainly elements of fund over-promising and under-delivering, ii) Have lost interest in the style of the fund (isn't traditional buyout, do a lot more special sits and hairy deals) and also spending a lot of my time in areas I'm not interested, iii) was approached about a really unique opportunity that doesn't come around often; will be a much better learning experience

No advice to give on this one. Reasonable people who actually give 2 shits about you will understand, even if it does sting a little. Unreasonable asshats that don't give a flying fuck about you will be mad for the inconvenience. You're not leaving for another fund that does exactly the same thing and from the sound of it, is a pretty unique opportunity. Best of luck to you.
