LMM PE -> Public Equities

Any idea on how placement from LMM PE into top L/S or LO funds would be? I am considering starting in PE out of undergrad instead of IB (mid BB coverage). Obviously, IB has the advantage of name brand + more formal training experience. But in PE, you're thinking like an investor unlike IB, and you are doing more detailed models than on the sellside. The fund I'm considering is very new and relatively small, but the founders (and the rest of the team) have strong pedigrees. Any thoughts on how hard it would be to go to public equities from there?
