Market Research Reports - Helpful / Worth it?

Hey everyone,

Fairly new into role at a PE shop, we're looking at a port co in a fairly new sector / industry. Part of due diligence may involve buying a market research report on the particular space so we can better understand the supply chain, prices, buyers, offtakers, etc.

Curious if you've found these market research reports available online helpful / useful? They're obviously pretty expensive ($5000+) so wanted to check around to see what other people have used.

If you have used these, who do you think are the best firms / report producers?

(Not really looking to hire a consulting / market research firm but would be interested in something that's available online and already published.)

Any insight is appreciated!

Online reports are... fine. They can give you a good set of customers and can sometimes describe the dynamics of the industry. Sometimes they will even have a product grid comparing customers. For $5,000, this is a fairly inexpensive way to avoid a couple days of research on how an industry works. But I would not base any decision making on a market report like this - they are the bare minimum of information to help you orient yourself as you do real diligence, talk to real customers / suppliers, competitors, etc.

Thank you!

Any chance you might know some of the more reputable sources / producers of such research?

I've heard some negative reviews on some of the things available on research and markets for example, like Grandview Research, most of which mention they are simply repackaging materials / data found on google etc.
