Marketplace business take rate / rake benchmarks / comps

Does anybody have these? I can't seem to find any good comps sets online for marketplace rake / take rates by vertical / scale etc. I understand generally that they should be in the 10% - 30% range but am looking for more granularity. Thank you.

Every public marketplace business (Expedia, Uber, eBay, Grubhub, etc.) should be reporting this info. That said take-rate is often industry specific and based on a few factors including:

  • How hard is this to do directly (ie how much value does the marketplace add)
  • How competitive is the market? More players generally = more fee pressure
  • What kind of margins do end participants have? For example hotel marketplaces often have higher take rates than airlines because the latter operate on a razors edge

This stuff should be pretty easy to track down even for specific private businesses, usually listed on their website for business partners or (if consumer-targeted) added as a surcharge on your purchase where you can back into the math
