Few factors:

Go earlier if:

  • Feel sufficiently prepared for PE interviews and don’t need more time
  • You’re 100% set on PE and experience / perspectives gained won’t change that
  • You’re very timeline and/or income focused and just want to get to PE as soon/young as possible

    Wait a year if:

  •  Extra time to prep and go through training would be valuable
  •  You’re not entirely sure  about PE and want to see other exit opportunities
  • You value the third year - I actually really did (specifically the managerial experience was really valuable when I became a mid-level in PE managing associates); I also found that the extra leash built my confidence and helped (more than MBA) with soft skills for PE (leading meetings, working with mgmt teams, etc.)
