Megafund Special Sits Groups?

Anyone have thoughts on these groups as long term seats from the VP+ level? Seems like every MF has something along those lines, including BX, KKR, Bain, Warburg, Apollo, Area, Brookfield, Carlyle, TPG, etc. though not a lot of info. It seems like some of these sit within the broader PE side of things while others are part of credit or standalone business units.

Anyone have a sense for any of the above groups and how one would think about a long term seats or career within one of these strategies?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Megafund Special Situations (Special Sits) groups can vary significantly in structure and focus, depending on the firm. Here's a breakdown of key considerations for these groups as long-term career seats at the VP+ level:

  1. Group Structure and Focus:

    • Some Special Sits groups are housed within the broader Private Equity (PE) division, while others operate as part of credit or even as standalone business units. For example:
      • Blackstone (BX) and KKR often have Special Sits teams that focus on structured equity, distressed debt, and opportunistic investments.
      • Apollo and Brookfield may lean more heavily into credit-oriented strategies.
      • Bain Capital and Warburg Pincus might integrate these strategies more closely with their traditional PE operations.
  2. Strategy and Investment Approach:

    • These groups typically focus on structured minority equity, growth buyouts, opportunistic private and public credit, and sometimes distressed investments. However, they may avoid pure "loan-to-own" or turnaround PE strategies, depending on the firm.
    • The diversity of strategies can make these roles intellectually stimulating and provide exposure to a wide range of deal types.
  3. Long-Term Career Viability:

    • Pros:
      • These roles can offer a unique blend of PE and credit experience, which is valuable for professionals looking to build a versatile skill set.
      • The ability to work on complex, bespoke deals can be highly rewarding and differentiate you from traditional PE professionals.
    • Cons:
      • Career progression may depend on the firm's commitment to the strategy. If the group is a smaller or less integrated part of the firm, it could face resource constraints or strategic shifts.
      • Some groups may lack the same level of exit opportunities or prestige as traditional PE roles, depending on their focus and deal flow.
  4. Firm-Specific Considerations:

    • Blackstone (BX) and KKR are often seen as leaders in this space, with well-established Special Sits teams that are integral to their broader investment platforms.
    • Apollo is known for its credit-heavy approach, which might appeal to those with a strong interest in credit and distressed investing.
    • Brookfield and Carlyle may offer more niche opportunities, depending on their focus areas and geographic reach.
  5. Key Factors to Evaluate:

    • Deal Flow: Ensure the group has a steady pipeline of high-quality deals.
    • Integration: Consider whether the group is well-integrated into the firm's broader platform or operates in isolation.
    • Resources and Support: Evaluate the level of resources, including team size, capital allocation, and leadership commitment.
    • Exit Opportunities: Assess how the experience aligns with your long-term career goals, whether within the firm or externally.

In summary, Megafund Special Sits groups can be excellent long-term seats for professionals who value diverse deal exposure and a mix of PE and credit strategies. However, the viability of these roles depends heavily on the firm's structure, strategy, and commitment to the group.
