MF PE Entry Comp
Was SA at an EB last summer and converted the offer, did FT recruiting for MF PE and was fortunate to be offered a grad role. The base comp was however slightly below the offer at EB, would it realistic to ask for the PE firm to match the base? What would the considerations be to ask or would there be no chance of them matching?
Dude... get a grip.
There is about ten thousand other people willing to take the pay cut for MF PE, so no don't ask.
did you recruit FT after getting offer or during SA?
Please ask. Maybe they’ll give us a raise once they realize where street is at.

A lot
OP here, curious to hear what the possible risks are to asking, would I be sacrificing goodwill? Look stupid? Or is it a reasonable ask and the worst that could happen is the firm says no?
Also, are policies for comp fixed or is there discretion for the hiring VP/MD to move it higher/lower?
Yeah don't understand the reasoning behind taking a discount to work at a MF.It works supply/demand side for the funds, but why the fuck do people defend being paid less / actively side with the company? Clearly someone that's a MF analyst should be paid more than an IB analyst, but people have a boot licker mentality I guess. There's really nothing wrong with trying to get paid what's fair, I guess people are a bunch of pussies. Obviously not saying don’t threaten to take another offer or actually try and negotiate. Similar vein to if you were an IB Analyst at a shop that hadn’t raised base yet the past year, asking once you got your offer letter that showed a lower base if there were expectations of comp increases. Not threatening to leave or go somewhere else but just asking.
It will definitely piss them off, and is generally a bad look. The hiring MD likely has no power in setting your comp.
Depends how you ask:"Were there gonna be any comp increases made to match the IBs"Vs.Being aggressive and asking for a comp match
I think key is being very careful in having no sign of power struggle / indicating aggression.
this is a terrible idea. please do not ask. You will annoy them over what - 20k? 40k? who cares. as someone pointed out, the hiring MD/partner typically has nothing to do with setting company wide associate comp, and it's a silly ask for a 22 year old. you will absolutely sacrifice goodwill.
Comp negotiations really only start at the junior VP level, and with good reason - you are so easily replaceable for much of your junior career (especially as a first year analyst with hundreds of others candidates, dozens of whom are likely just as/more qualified than you)
I get your sentiment but maybe you're responding to the idea of negotiation / being aggressive. There shouldn't be anything wrong with asking if there 'will be' raises e.g. just raising the question and still putting the power with the company.
Agree on trying to negotiate as a Junior since the value add is not unique.
Prepare a comp analysis deck and negotiate on every point in the offer letter. Don’t let any subtle point be a stone unturned. Before the scheduled end of the conversation throw out a preemptive comp package and tell them to take it or you walk. Guaranteed partner in 3 years.
