Advice for PE analyst

Currently a MM PE analyst at a firm primarily investing in industrials and want to switch to anything in TMT. I think my best bet is to target TMT MM PE firms but was given an exploding associate offer from my current PE firm which I accepted. I need to leave my current firm as its truly not a good fit for me. What are thoughts on reneging my associate offer with current PE firm and going on cycle or would off cycle make more sense.

Quite a dilemma you’ve put yourself in. But I think you’re already leaning towards leaving due to culture (exploding associate offer probably indicative of a lot more strong-arming at your firm). Beyond this, it’ll only get harder to switch sectors as you get older.

I’ve just went through a similar transition from MM Industrials to UMM Tech. While my firm didn’t lock me down in the same way, as I joined as an analyst, they were not expecting me to leave nor did I feel they were particularly supportive. In order to make the decision that I thought was best for me, I:

  • prepped a lot of LBOs & tech specific modeling
  • spoke to a lot of people from VC to PE in consumer tech all the way to cybersecurity which allowed me to identify interesting subsectors and be able to speak elegantly about KPIs and market outlooks beyond financials
  • learned from failed case studies (I didn’t have a bunch of resources so I used the case studies and walkthroughs as opportunities to learn from my interviewers)
  • built a close relationship with at least 2-3 people that could serve as references without telling my firm

Not sure about your specific situation/timing, but you likely will have a decent chance going for off-cycle or lateral.

Best of luck!

thank you so much this makes total sense. Congrats on your offer!! Any resources you recommend for tech specific modeling? Also, if my current firm finds out is it likely they fire me on the spot or is that something I am just imagining of? Did you go on cycle or off cycle to land this UMM Tech opportunity, and if do you think maybe waiting until I'm a first year associate and trying to lateral would yield a better risk adjusted return? Thanks!
