How common is the above path? Would you be recruiting for a VP or Associate position out of B-School? Would assume a lot of people would do this / have run into this if they didn't reach VP at their current fund

Probably Senior Associate to VP. Depends on how strong of a MM name you're coming from, how good your deal experience is, if you made Senior Associate at your prior firm, and the size of firm you're joining. I doubt that you could do 3 years at a smaller MM fund, go to B-school and then be VP at a larger well known fund, but you could probably do the reverse, going from a big fund to a small, if that makes sense. Some firms might start you as Senior Associate for a year or two as well to make sure you'll work out before giving you carry and the VP title.
