makes your story pretty muddled. any top shops will be asking why you left PE if you truly wanted to be an investor

 

Not OP but in a similar-ish situation - given the apparent consensus that solid IB analyst training + experience > PE analyst for UMM/MF PE associate roles, what's wrong with outright just saying that in an interview, that you got the feedback that the standardized training in IB was better and so you went to IB to better prepare yourself for a large-cap PE role?

 

It really isn't. By the time I decided to go into finance, SA recruiting was already over. I'm really grateful for the position I got but I believe that from an optionality standpoint, name brand matters. Hence, why I'm asking this question.

 

Similar boat at an MMPE shop thinking about going back to banking (although unsure if any BB/EB would be open to this background) - if anyone has any actionable advice, would really appreciate it.
