MM to MF after HBS
If one doesn't end up at a megafund after 2 years in investment banking, but rather, ends up at a MM shop for the pre-MBA stint, would it be possible to transition to a megafund after 2 years at HBS or do megafunds only take post-MBA associates that worked at megafunds prior to H/S/W?
My guess is that this is possible if the pre-MBA stint was at a top MM shop like Madison Dearborn or something but would it be possible if one went to a no-name MM shop? This is assuming an MBA at HBS in between.
Also, how different is compensation between MM and MF shops for post-MBA roles, especially as you move up?
I personally know two friends who have done this, so yes it is possible but obviously it's going to be hard.
Also depends on reputation of your MM. A shop like Madison Dearborn is just as good as a megafund IMO.
Don't know if TA Associates is considered MM (Its almost $20 Bn) but a friend who was in TA Associates pre HBS is now at SAC and another at Warburg Pincus now post Stanford GSB
I would hardly call Madison Dearborn a MM shop
I think if you get into GSB or HBS, you can pretty move to where you want if you are successful in the interviews. Plus you can always do internships over the summer. Some even do 2 as far as I know.
