Moving across the aisle, special situations debt -> deep value / distressed private equity

I am currently in a debt focused (including non-control equity) investment seat at a UMM fund and want to move to a more distressed PE type of role. U.S. located if that matters.

I am interested in hearing if anyone has experience in making a similar jump and at what level?

I ultimately want to have a bit more exposure to operating businesses and management.
