Moving from Brazil to NY as PE analyst - What is important to know

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a second-year analyst working at a private equity fund in São Paulo, Brazil.

Since the fund is not planning further investments in Brazil at the moment, I’ve asked my boss if I could collaborate with the New York team on deals or potentially go to NY for some training and meet the team in person. Fortunately, they agreed, and I’m now waiting for them to present a formal work proposal.

The office is located near to 5th avenue and 59th street.

I'd be happy to hear your guys opinion on the following topics:

  1. What are common mistakes junior analysts tend to make that I should be mindful of avoiding?
  2. What does competitive compensation look like in NY, especially for a firm managing around $6 billion in assets?
  3. What’s the base case cost of living in NY, particularly in or near that area?
  4. Which neighborhoods would you recommend for a good balance between price and location?
  5. Any general advice or observations on living in New York? I’m excited about this opportunity and want to prepare myself as much as possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insights!
