Networking for PE

Hi all,
I have a 2027 Ib summer analyst role, and atm my plan is to do 2 years ib then move to a pe firm. I go to a target school as a STEM major, so I’m pretty confident that many large infra pe firms will have alumni who will (hopefully) be willing to talk with me. What should my networking timeframe be if I want to exit into PE? I was thinking after my internship I should focus on connecting with those people but honestly just looking for advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the advice for your situation:

  1. Start Networking Early: While your plan to begin networking after your internship is reasonable, starting earlier can give you a significant edge. Many professionals recommend initiating conversations about 6 months into your IB role. This allows you to build relationships over time rather than rushing when PE recruiting heats up.

  2. Leverage Alumni Connections: Since you're at a target school with a STEM background, alumni at large infrastructure PE firms are a great resource. Reach out to them for informational interviews, advice, and insights into their career paths. This can help you establish rapport and stay on their radar.

  3. Engage with Headhunters: PE recruiting often involves headhunters. Start connecting with them early in your IB stint to understand the timeline and expectations for PE recruiting. They can also provide guidance on how to position yourself effectively.

  4. Focus on Value-Added Conversations: When networking, don't just ask for opportunities. Instead, seek advice, discuss industry trends, and show genuine interest in their work. This approach builds stronger, more meaningful connections.

  5. Prepare for PE Recruiting: Use resources like the WSO Private Equity Interview Course to get ready for the technical and case-based aspects of PE interviews. This preparation will complement your networking efforts.

  6. Timing for PE Recruiting: PE recruiting typically starts early, often within the first year of your IB role. Be prepared to engage with firms and headhunters as early as 6-12 months into your job.

By starting early and maintaining consistent, meaningful connections, you'll position yourself well for a successful transition into PE.
