No learning curve on internship
Currently an off-cycle analyst at PE firm. I have seen no real progression in the type of work I have been doing. I understand I cannot be given full responsibility for tasks but the job is becoming monotonous andlearningcurve .hashcompletelyflflattene.
Lol. I am in the same position, expect I am a FT at a small fund. Its starting to get a little better for me, but the reason why we give our interns data projects (vs. deal related) is because we don't know how long the deal will drag on and we don't want the interns to go back to school while the deal is still going on. Plus, finishing projects gives them some closure/something to talk about.
I don't agree with the rational as we have interns that want deal experience, but then again, my superiors are F&D stupid!
Yeah I can understand that rationale. It’s just the team members don’t take time out to sit down and walk through some of the work they do with me. They assign me with work and don’t really follow up on how to improve it or progress. I think that’s one of the more frustrating elements.
Can you take the initiative to follow up with them, rather than expecting them to follow up with you? For example, email your completed work and include a calendar invitation for 15 minutes to review the work with your boss, solicit feedback, and ask any questions that help you connect your work with the larger picture.
You've got to judge for yourself if your firm has the type of culture where this will be well received, but generally, taking ownership of your own development will usually yield positive results.
Sorry, I should have clarified that I’ve done that before. The difficulty is in doing instigated that myself every time. I suppose the issue you raised around culture is important. The firm I am at is well known but it hires experienced professionals rather than grads . I am trying to budge the gaps by doing some courses in my free time to offer some jobs to the team. Hopefully that is the catalyst in destroying the learning curve.
