Oakley Capital - London
Hi All,
Any ideas/ info on the returns, culture and compensation in Oakley? They report the gross returns but not sure how “real” they are. Are the people there smart?
Thank you

Bumping this. Happy new year
OK fund, but would not recommend unless you have no other options. I personally know a guy who was fired from his existing role in PE, due to poor performance, who recently joined. Know another guy who got an offer from a MM bank and somewhat irrelevant background; not sure if they do Nepo hiring
They also had an ex Warburg girl joining recently
Very helpful. Thank you sir
Bear in mind she is the exception (probs also fired / burn out), most guys are from EBs / Boutiques who mainly work on MM continental deals. It's an OK fund but if you're coming from a top BB group I reckon you can aim higher
Can echo above comments. Very large team considering fund size with questions around promotion chances, lot of questionable recent hires (fired e.g. WP girl, unusual backgrounds, hiring female analysts with zero experience). Comp below market (was quoted to direction of 85k base Associate 1).
How are you guys so sure about "fired" just because someone moved from a large fund like WP to mid-market...
(1) Most people want to get out of MFs (espec. WP) (2) what is an unusual background (3) from experience it's incredibly difficult to hire women and you can't be picky there.
Anyhow, I know nothing about this fund.
Economically, does not make logical sense going from WP (which pays top of street, and has huge carry potential to due 15bn+ fund size) to a place like Oakley - unless burned-out, fired or very passionate about mid-market investing
Performances are top quartile, think 3x net. Can't comment on comp but its a one man shop, Peter Dubens basically runs the shop (believe he owns 100% manco). Definitely believable on Nepo hires, place gives me old british white men vibes - believe they currently employ a royal.
Any insight on comps and how it steps up?
Associate 1, 85k base, up to 100% bonus
Investment Manager 130-140k base, up to 100% bonus
Carry granted on Associate 2 level
Thanks! Is IM after 2 years or do they have senior associate level in between? Seems nice bump if £130-140k after 2 years associate
This seems incredibly low for a decent MM shop? This is what a mid-bucket AN2 makes at my fund lol
Most MM funds have grown fund size considerably in recent years and the natural consequence of that is that they’ve strayed into territory which they’re unfamiliar with and have no track record in e.g now writing £150-300m equity cheques in competitive processes when their historic bread and butter (and incredible returns) have been in the £40-£60m equity cheque range typically in a narrow process or bilateral situation.
its just a consequence of growth.
all this to say “past performance not an indicator of future performance” - hence these “3x net” stats are meaningless
stupid to say “they hired a supposedly fired person from xx fund hence its weak as a fund” - you couldn’t find a single fund in London that hasn’t done so - without circumstances of situation useless to use an indicator. And yes defo possible to burn out at WP even if you’re making 400k “more to life than greenback”
historcially Oakley has been solid - gl
mm
Agreed!
Btw: WP compensation for Associate 1 is 300-350k, not 400k.
How do they rank vs other mid market firms such as Charterhouse, Inflexion, Stirling Square etc
Are they back in market? Thought they weren't hiring again till september?
update comp for assoc and IM?
Better than Charterhouse and Stirling Sq. both have had iffy returns.
I'd probs say better than Inflexion - or similar level.
How do they fare compared to Inflexion? Anyone have any insight?
People know if they’re hiring right now?
Does anyone know anything about Oakley's actual returns, compensation, and culture?
returns very good, compensation shit, culture is okay
How bad is comp? Any figures for associate base + bonus?
Can someone confirm is base is £100k or £90k
