On Cycle PE Prep

Hi all,

Other than thoroughly understanding concepts through online courses what are some suggestions that you'd have to help someone best position themselves in on cycle PE recruitment?

How much do in-semester MM PE roles help prepare a candidate / give candidate more content to talk about in an interview? Is it worth it to take on a big time commitment during the school year for greater industry exposure?

Would appreciate any guidance that you might have. Thank you.

To best position yourself for on-cycle PE recruitment, here are some actionable suggestions based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Preparation Strategy:

    • Focus on technical skills like financial modeling and valuation. Many candidates recommend grinding out modeling practice over weekends to stay sharp.
    • Dive into industry primers and books like Competition Demystified to build a strong understanding of the PE industry.
    • Prepare for behavioral and technical interviews by practicing common questions, such as explaining your deal experience or walking through a case study.
  2. In-Semester MM PE Roles:

    • These roles can be valuable as they provide real-world deal experience and give you more content to discuss during interviews. PE firms often value candidates who can articulate their contributions to deals and demonstrate a clear understanding of the investment process.
    • However, the time commitment can be significant. If it interferes with your ability to excel academically or prepare for interviews, it might not be worth it. Balance is key.
  3. Additional Tips:

    • Speak with second-year analysts or peers who have gone through the process to gather insights on headhunters, firm preferences, and interview nuances.
    • If you're not from a highly targeted background, consider waiting until you have more time to prepare and can stand out with stronger deal experience and technical skills.
    • Avoid rushing into a mega-fund (MF) role just for the name. Explore opportunities that align with your long-term goals and interests.

Ultimately, the decision to take on an in-semester role depends on your ability to manage the workload and how much value you believe it will add to your candidacy.
