Options from HBS/GSB with 1Y MF experience

I've just started at HBS/GSB with one year of MF PE experience (with IB/MBB beforehand). Was in a deferred program and they wouldn't let me defer more than 4 years. What do you think my options will be / what sort of things are realistic targets? Am interested in more unique roles/strategies, both in public and private markets. Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some realistic career options and strategies you can consider with your background of one year in MF PE and prior experience in IB/MBB, especially after starting at HBS/GSB:

  1. Corporate Strategy at Industry Majors:

    • Transition into a corporate strategy role at a major industry player.
    • Potential to move into a P&L role over time, though it can be challenging.
  2. International Public Service:

    • Consider roles at organizations like the World Bank or UN agencies.
    • These positions can leverage your strategic and financial expertise.
  3. Leadership Development Programs (LDPs):

    • Many Fortune 500 companies offer rotational programs focusing on business development, marketing, and sometimes finance/HR.
    • These programs can provide a broad exposure to different business functions.
  4. Fintech and Emerging Technologies:

    • Explore opportunities in fintech, VR, life extension, drones, and other emerging tech sectors.
    • These fields are high-paying and offer exciting, innovative work environments.
  5. Startups:

    • Joining a startup can be a viable option, especially if you are interested in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.
    • Your HBS/GSB network can be a valuable resource for finding promising startups.
  6. Public Investing:

    • If you are interested in public markets, consider roles in hedge funds or asset management firms.
    • Your background in PE and IB/MBB can be advantageous in these roles.
  7. General Management:

    • Look for general management roles in large corporations, which can offer a broad scope of responsibilities and strategic impact.

These options provide a mix of traditional and unique career paths that align with your background and interests.

I think you could realistically get a "senior associate" PE role (the flavor of 3rd year associate with path to direct promotion with strong performance). I think true post-MBA SA/VP (i.e., managing associates, no longer modeling, etc.) will be tougher with only one year of associate experience as you'll be competing for jobs with classmates with 2-3 years PE experience.

I’d say don’t be afraid to humbly pitch yourself as “over-qualified” / a “bargain candidate.” You have plenty of relevant experience and credentials but can give a firm more “try before you buy” time by placing you lower at the outset and letting you prove yourself.

I’d target firms with 3rd year associate programs and/or SAs and/or hiring for an experienced associate with path to direct promotion. Your biggest challenge will be nailing the timing as some of those probably want immediate start.

Obviously don’t come off as unconfident but wouldn’t hide from your slightly atypical background and emphasize desire to work hard and re-enter the sector.
