Options from HBS/GSB with 1Y MF experience
I've just started at HBS/GSB with one year of MF PE experience (with IB/MBB beforehand). Was in a deferred program and they wouldn't let me defer more than 4 years. What do you think my options will be / what sort of things are realistic targets? Am interested in more unique roles/strategies, both in public and private markets. Thanks in advance!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some realistic career options and strategies you can consider with your background of one year in MF PE and prior experience in IB/MBB, especially after starting at HBS/GSB:
Corporate Strategy at Industry Majors:
International Public Service:
Leadership Development Programs (LDPs):
Fintech and Emerging Technologies:
Startups:
Public Investing:
General Management:
These options provide a mix of traditional and unique career paths that align with your background and interests.

Could go back into PE or try for SM L/S
Why do you say that? Not disagreeing but not sure the pod model is the best fit for me (e.g., trading quarterly earnings, constant chaining to the market, etc) - I feel I'd like to take more of a long-term orientation

I think you could realistically get a "senior associate" PE role (the flavor of 3rd year associate with path to direct promotion with strong performance). I think true post-MBA SA/VP (i.e., managing associates, no longer modeling, etc.) will be tougher with only one year of associate experience as you'll be competing for jobs with classmates with 2-3 years PE experience.
Yeah this was what I was hoping for, would happily take that, don’t think I’m ready to be a VP anyway. Good to know that at least one person thinks its doable. Any targeted advice on how to reach out or navigate recruiting?
I’d say don’t be afraid to humbly pitch yourself as “over-qualified” / a “bargain candidate.” You have plenty of relevant experience and credentials but can give a firm more “try before you buy” time by placing you lower at the outset and letting you prove yourself.
I’d target firms with 3rd year associate programs and/or SAs and/or hiring for an experienced associate with path to direct promotion. Your biggest challenge will be nailing the timing as some of those probably want immediate start.
Obviously don’t come off as unconfident but wouldn’t hide from your slightly atypical background and emphasize desire to work hard and re-enter the sector.
