Pe after graduation

Is it really impossible to break into Pe right after graduation? I’ve done some research and the answer is mostly yes unless you come from target school. However most of them said that is really hard but never that is impossible. Is there someone who made it? What did you do in case?

Breaking into private equity (PE) right after graduation is indeed challenging, but it is not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and examples of how individuals have managed to achieve this:

  1. Non-Traditional Backgrounds: There are stories of individuals who broke into PE without the typical target school or banking background. For example, one veteran with a 3.0 GPA taught himself financial modeling, cold-called 1,000 recruiters and PE funds, and networked relentlessly. His persistence led to a phone interview with a headhunter, which eventually landed him an onsite interview and a job offer.

  2. Networking and Differentiation: Networking is critical. You need to stand out by demonstrating your passion and skills. For instance, someone who transitioned from being a realtor to working at General Atlantic in NYC did so by differentiating themselves and leveraging their network.

  3. Focus on Smaller or Middle-Market PE Firms: Targeting smaller or middle-market PE shops can increase your chances. These firms may be more open to hiring candidates through non-traditional paths.

  4. Cold Networking and Studying: If you don’t come from a target school, you’ll need to put in extra effort. This includes cold emailing, cold calling, and studying financial modeling and PE fundamentals on your own time.

  5. Alternative Entry Points: If breaking into PE immediately after graduation proves too difficult, consider starting in a strong financial services role (e.g., investment banking, consulting) and lateraling into PE. This is a more traditional and achievable path.

While the odds are stacked against you without a target school background, persistence, networking, and skill-building can help you overcome these barriers.
