PE interviews and rank in banking?

Does anyone know if what rank/ bucket you get strongly influences PE interviews and their results? Just curious because I’m at a bank (think BAML/Citi level) where my group hired 1-4 laterals out of ~10 people and some of these guys have years of experience doing related work and some of them started work early (3-6 months) too. However we’re all ranked against each other. Does rank determine which interviews you get and are you asked about it in interviews? I am thinking of doing on cycle next year, did not participate this year.
