PE Recruiting Advice for Incoming 1st Years
Incoming first year at an EB in M&A here interested in recruiting to PE. How do I go about deciding what type of PE I want to do with on cycle recruiting so early in the fall? I think I want to do tech PE but also want to stay in NY and don't even know where to start researching firms that might fit that. Any and all advice appreciated.

I’ve already said some semi-relevant stuff here: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/how-to-prepare-for-after-ib-anal…
You’re spot-on in that you have to know geography and (unless you explicitly want generalist) industry focus, but you also need to have defined preferences on fund size and firm strategy. HHs want convicted kids who they’re confident will place and not quit early. You don’t have to know the exact landscape of the firms that fit your criteria, but it’d be good to know ~10 in the neighborhood.
In the meetings, you’ll describe your preferences (don’t have to list names); they’ll slide you their client list at the end, then perhaps guide you to the best fits. I’d recommend taking said meetings as early as possible (to the extent you’re prepared, as they’re pseudo-interviews) so you can start networking and doing your own diligence on their relevant fund clients.
Should incoming analysts wait until training starts to hit up head hunters? Or would it be looked down upon to hit up head hunters now?
They’re email you (or your peers at your / other banks — just have someone forward). It would look quite odd to reach out as a current college senior.
This is good advice +SB
If you're friendly with second years in your group, you can ask them (they're generally your best resource in everything)
On the modeling prep side, I recommend multiple expansion . com
Do you need to have one specific city to target when you talk to headhunters? I know you need some geographic preference but if you have 2 cities you're interested in, should you tell different HHs different cities or is it ok to tell each one the two cities you have in mind?
Two is fine. "I'm largely location agnostic" is an okay answer as well. If you want to be super-strategic, you could arguably tell WC search firms (Oxbridge, CP, etc.) that you want California and all the EC ones (HSP, CPI, etc.) that you want to stay in NYC, but you'll get enough looks that it's probably worth having them send you ones you'd actually want.
