PE Recruiting as a 2nd year on A2A track

How do PE firms view oncycle candidates that interview as a 2nd year, but have signed on for A2A instead of a 3rd analyst year. Will funds care or rescind offer?

Worded differently, if I missed out on oncycle can I go through the process next summer despite knowing my firm doesn’t have a 3rd year analyst program (but is open for A2A).

Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about PE recruiting as a 2nd year on the A2A track:

  1. Stronger Candidate as a 2nd Year:

    • As a second-year analyst, you might be a much stronger candidate and stand out more compared to first-year analysts. This can be particularly beneficial if you're from a slightly weaker bank or group.
  2. Off-Cycle Opportunities:

    • Even if you miss out on the on-cycle recruiting, large funds do hire people off-cycle from time to time. It's less common but it happens. For example, someone from a group went to Apax after skipping the main recruiting season.
  3. Commitment to On-Cycle:

    • If you opt into on-cycle recruiting, commit to it. Interviewers may prefer fresh candidates over those who came up empty in on-cycle, as they might be deemed "picked over."
  4. Interview Preparation:

    • The bar for preparation may be a bit lower on-cycle. Interviewers recognize that candidates are new and may be more lenient in their expectations.
  5. A2A Considerations:

    • If your firm is open to A2A (Analyst to Associate) promotions, this could be a strong point in your favor. However, you should be prepared to explain why you are considering PE instead of staying at your current firm where you are already ingrained.
  6. Risk of Rescinded Offers:

    • There is no specific mention in the context about PE firms rescinding offers due to candidates being on the A2A track. However, it's crucial to communicate clearly with potential PE employers about your current commitments and future plans.

In summary, while being on the A2A track might raise some questions, it doesn't necessarily disqualify you from PE recruiting. Your experience as a second-year analyst can make you a more attractive candidate, and there are opportunities both on-cycle and off-cycle. Just be prepared to discuss your career trajectory and why you're making the switch.
