PE Recruiting Timeframe and Recommendations

With PE recruiting getting pushed up earlier and earlier each year, how do first year analysts go about getting strong recommendations from MDs?

Last year’s cycle had first year analysts recruiting in August and September- after only being on the desk for a couple weeks. How do analysts go about asking for recommendations when they haven’t had the chance to demonstrate their ability?

Would it be better to wait until off-cycle recruiting or wait until your second year before going through the process? That way MDs know you personally and can speak on your abilities?

Yes, it’s top of mind for firms right now and most are prioritizing it over their portcos / new deals. Most places still need to finalize with their ICs, but consensus seems to be that on-cycle will happen on Thursday, October 29, 2020 (~3 days later than planned ex. COVID-19).
