Pigeonholed in Energy IB and Questions on Generalist PE

Lucky that I received a return offer at an Energy IB with relatively high deal flow. I’m quite interested in a more generalist PE stint at a well reputed fund. I know there’s a tradeoff between being at a MF like Apollo/KKR/BX but only provides infra opps vs taking a hit on name brand to do something generalist. How much of a hit of name brand will you take recruiting out of Houston?

I’m extremely worried I will be constantly out beat by kids in New York for those better opportunities and wanted to get some perspective. I also don’t want to end up in Texas for my entire life/ majority of my career doing only oil and gas or energy buyside opps.

I’ve known guys that have completed 1-2 years as analyst in Houston and then transferring internally to nyc to a different group. It seems banks have been embracing the advantages of keeping their analysts beyond the 2 years so letting them transfer is an ok move. The downside is that this would likely increase your banking stint by 1-2 years but you have a long career so not too big of a deal when you take a step back
