Pivoting from Real Estate to PE

Hi all,

I have spent my career working in Real Estate (residential & commercial) as an owner, operator and start up founder, but I am looking to pivot into PE.

Currently undertaking my CFA lv1 to boost my academic credentials with the plan to get my charter.

Posting as it would be good to hear from people's experiences in breaking into this area from a very non-traditional background.

My thought process is that the knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my career so far could be a benefit and be seen as valuable.

Look forward to hearing people's thoughts!

Why are you taking the CFA if you want to be in PE? The CFA is for asset management and the credential does nothing to boost your profile for PE recruiting, IMO it will just make you look scattered/unfocused/unsure of what you want.

I broke in from corporate M&A vs the traditional banking/consulting routes so happy to elaborate on some more specific questions. Are you aiming for REPE or what area are you targeting? My firm has had a lot of RE background folks from both the commercial and residential side apply through our last couple of recruiting processes but none of them ever made it to final rounds, not to say it can't be done but it will definitely be an uphill battle.
