Portco to fund

WSO,I am a prior M&A BB banker and worked a MM PE fund. I now have a generous comp package at a portco for strategic finance (think corp dev on steroids).

The thing is I want to go back to PE and the backer is a major player. I'm senior and interact with them during presentations and calls.

Has anyone left PE and returned successfully? I don't mind my place in the portco, but it's not for me.
