Pros/Cons of getting into GP Stakes Investing

What are the drawbacks of joining a GP Stakes firm? Have some concerns if it may be too niche of an investment area, and would close off a lot of other potential laterals if I ever wanted to move around. On the flipside, this may be my best/only chance at getting into a buy-side type of role

GP stakes are essentially the new FOFs of the private markets industry but I tend to view them as FOFs without the optionality of *not* investing in the firm's subsequent fund vintages. You're essentially stuck. Say, 4-5 years ago, various GP stakes firms started underwriting the anticipated growth in AUM across the board at upstart GPs both big and small, hoping that they can ride the wave of tremendous growth that had been the norm for decades. Those lofty goals have now flagged considerably given the slowdown in the industry. I'm sure it'll continue to ebb and flow but it's a segment of the market I'd be a little wary of. Not sure what exits are at this point and what the exact career progression would be. I'd argue it's tougher to transition into a more conventional buyside role from GP stakes than even FOFs at this point but defer to others on their thoughts.

Thanks for your input. That’s one of my main concerns, if I go this route then pretty much have to stay in this specific area for a long time, getting the sense it’s not as transferable of an experience as other types of investing roles.
