Quitting After a Few Weeks?

I joined a Corp Dev (M&A) team at a large company, and after only a few weeks, I received an offer from a MM Private Equity firm. I have a slight preference for PE, but given the current job market challenges, I'm uncertain about leaving my current role so soon (3–4 weeks) to make the switch. 

Would you recommend taking the leap? If so, how would you approach the conversation with the Corp Dev team, and what would you say to navigate the transition professionally?

If I decide to stay, how challenging would it be to transition from Corp Dev to Private Equity in the future? Assuming the Corp Dev team is fully focused on M&A within the company, would this experience position me well for a move to PE down the line?

You’re looking at this wrong dude.

The only right answer here objectively is if you want PE, take PE. You’re right: the job market is tough. That means there is absolutely no guarantee you’ll get another offer, and the longer you’re in corp dev, the harder getting another offer will be.

Also, do not forget— if it benefited your corp dev pals in the very slightest to fire you, they would absolutely do it instantly .

How “slight” is your preference for PE? Said another way, will you regret not ever trying out PE? If so, make the jump and do it now. You’re always gonna be able to get back into Corp Dev, but not the other way around. 

You just need to walk in there with eyes wide open - MM PE is a VERY different experience from Corp Dev at a big company and you’ll be cranking again. So you need to take a hard look at your life and determine if you’re gonna be okay with that, because if you make the switch you better plan to stay for at least 1-2 years. 

 

If PE is your goal and the offer is solid, take it. MM PE gigs aren’t easy to get, and staying in Corp Dev too long can make the jump harder. If you leave, just keep it professional—thank your team, say it was a tough call, but this aligns better with your long-term goals. No need to over-explain. If you stay, Corp Dev M&A can still get you to PE, but it’ll take more networking or a detour through IB later.
