Recruiting from IB to PE in your 1st yr versus your 2nd year

What is recruiting from IB to PE like in your 1st year versus your 2nd year on the desk? Headhunters are currently reaching out and I feel super underprepared. I'm thinking about not responding and then responding the following year after a year of work exp.

assuming the names catching your eye are MF PE... if that's what you want, yeah on cycle is the best choice. They fill most of their class with on-cycle and some leave a handful for off-cycle.

but be honest with yourself - are you actually competitive for that right now? Most people aiming at MF are top-tier background and have been prepping for a good part of the summer. If you were 100p ready to go I'd say give it a shot, but telling HHs you want MF PE and then not doing well in intro interviews will hurt you down the line with those HHs and potentially keep you from going in front of their best clients. If you feel underprepared (not just nervous/anxious, but actually not sure what you want or not good at talking about it yet) you'd be better served trying for the off-cycle spots or waiting until next year.

There’s a ton of analysts who haven’t even hit the desk yet. Trust me in that EVERYONE is underprepared.

You can use this to your advantage if you prepare correctly. Think about the types of people you will be competing with at this stage, versus in 1 year when there are a lot less opportunities.

Also 1 other thing to consider is that on cycle sucks for a few days but then you’re smooth sailing for 2 years. My coworkers who didn’t recruit on-cycle this year have had extremely prolonged off-cycle processes which can be much more stressful because of the uncertainty, time commitment, etc.
