Rejected but want to reach back out to HM, context in post

Looking for some input on a process I was recently in. For context, I'm looking for PE work in a very specific Midwest market (S/O going to med school there). I've spent the past 2.5 months interviewing with a LMM industrial PE firm in my desired city that I was incredibly passionate about -- great pay, very cool work and in my desired vertical. The firm just raised a new fund and was looking to place 2-3 Associates. I went through 7 rounds of interviews, met all team members and operating partners (about 10 person team), had an onsite as well as a dinner and conducted an LBO case study for them. The case study was the last step and following my submission, the VP I had been in contact with told me that the model was great and the deck was fine but ultimately one of the partners wanted someone from a more prestigious bank (I'm currently in IB at a breakaway boutique). This kind of feels like BS feedback because they knew my background when they got my resume and still put me through 7 rounds but I know I'll never know if this was the real reason they passed on me or not. I also know from my recruiter that they had 2-3 other near-final round candidates that they had put on pause to move me through to the final round whom I'm sure they've reached back out to at this point.

Regardless, I've been having a tough time getting over the rejection as this was basically my dream job. One other candidate ended up getting the job a few weeks before I was rejected, and I noticed on LinkedIn that he left after two weeks with the firm. I happen to know someone familiar with the situation, and found out this past Friday that the reason he left was that his old firm offered him an amount of money that he couldn't pass up.

So now the firm has placed 0 Associates and they've been hiring for this position since Oct-23. My question is this: am I being too desperate if I reach out to the VP that I was interviewing with, mention that I noticed the other Associate left and offer to throw my hat back in the ring? I know that I should probably just move on from the rejection but for some dumb reason I'm holding out hope that I'll get the ever-sought-after call back post-rejection. I know that at the end of the day they have my resume and would call if they wanted to, but I've been wrestling with this for the past few weeks and would appreciate any insight. Thanks
