Renege SM Offer

I joined a PE analyst program out of undergrad with the goal of transitioning to a hedge fund after my tenure as an analyst. I accepted an offer to join a top SM but realized that it might not be the right time to join a hedge fund and because I have developed a positive rapport with the most of the people on the private equity team. If I were to renege, will my fund find out and fire me? Will this close the door to join a SM or a MM hedge fund in the future?
