Reneging PE offer?

Have heard very mixed things about reneging PE offers so wanted to hear any updates thoughts. Some say you should do what's best for your career and that no one will care to remember in 20 years, while others say that it's a small industry and could be risky.

Say you sign with a MM PE firm in a T2 city a few months ago and now decided that you prefer to be in a different city and invest in a different industry. Is it advisable to continue recruiting for PE opportunities in the industry/geo that you are more interested in? I would assume it's safer than reneging for another firm in the same city that invest in the same industry, but curious to hear any thoughts.

Also would like to know any best practices on minimizing risks in the process, and how to best communicate with the firm you are reneging from without having them talking to your new firm.

Depends if you got this offer through a HH. If you did, reneging could essentially burn the bridge with the HH and the clients they cover. If this was an independent process, it’s still pretty risky and unprofessional, but you could probably pull it off if a better offer came across the way.
