Career Resources
I had a highly usual experience speaking with their team, which seemed more focused on socioeconomic background than actual experience. During an interview, they asked me what my parents do for a living (I've been working for many years, so super weird), which high school I went to - whether it was public or private, my "personal brand/clique" in high school, the neighborhood where I grew up. I was also asked what my current salary is, which I believe is prohibited from asking for roles in Philadelphia. I have not come across any other PE firms who interviews in this way.
I also interviewed with them and had the same experience / questions asked during my 1st round interview. I answered honestly - don't think I could have "failed" these questions so was very weird overall. Never heard back.
I do think it says something about their culture based on the types of questions they prioritize. Especially considering most of us were coming out of highly competitive IB roles, I was still scratching my head over how questions about my parents' occupations, high school, or neighborhood were more relevant than discussing actual deal experience, investment judgment, or analytical thinking. To me, it felt unnecessarily intrusive and an ineffective way to stereotype candidates.
That is incredibly bizarre and I’d treat it as a culture red flag. FWIW the people I’ve known there were chill, and they’ve crushed it returns-wise.
I’ve had interviews like this and delivery / context probably matters a lot. Where I’ve experienced it is very senior partners asking these question to better understand you and what drives you / your motivations are. For context I came from a lower middle class background and the tone from them was not contempt just genuine curiosity. I wouldn’t assume that because they’re asking these questions they’re assholes that want you to fit into some rich waspy private school mold but could definitely see it differing firm to firm. FWIW I got the offer and was promoted to VP.
