Feeling stuck and hopeless is tough, but based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a game plan to get back on track:

  1. Expand Your Search:

    • There are thousands of smaller firms (boutique IBs, PE firms, VC funds, hedge funds, valuation firms, etc.) that don’t follow the traditional recruiting cycle. Start cold-emailing these firms. Use search terms like "investment banking + [your city]" or "private equity + [your city]" to find opportunities.
    • Even unpaid or part-time roles can help you gain experience and keep your resume active.
  2. Leverage Your Network:

    • Tap into alumni networks, LinkedIn connections, and anyone you’ve met during your previous internships or interviews. Be direct about your situation and ask for advice or referrals.
    • Don’t underestimate the power of cold outreach. Hundreds of alumni and professionals are willing to help if you show genuine effort.
  3. Polish Your Story:

    • Make sure your resume and story are airtight. Highlight your PE internship and any relevant skills or achievements.
    • Be ready to explain why you’re still looking and how you’ve been proactive in your search. Confidence and resilience can resonate with interviewers.
  4. Consider Alternative Paths:

    • If IB or PE isn’t working out immediately, look into roles in corporate finance, valuation, or even startups. These can serve as stepping stones to your ultimate goal.
    • Remember, many professionals pivot into IB or PE after gaining experience elsewhere.
  5. Stay Mentally Tough:

    • It’s easy to feel defeated, but persistence is key. Many WSO users have shared stories of landing offers after countless rejections and setbacks.
    • Take care of your mental health and keep grinding. The moment you stop trying is when it’s truly over.
  6. Keep Learning:

    • Use this time to sharpen your technical skills. Whether it’s financial modeling, LBOs, or valuation techniques, being interview-ready is crucial.

Remember, the path to success isn’t always linear. Keep pushing, stay creative, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You’ve got this!
