Seattle Finance Scene

Hi all, For background, I am an incoming analyst at PJT/EVR/HL RX. Would love to settle down in the area. Not sure what opportunities there are for someone with my background as the finance scene seems to be dominated by tech types, so would appreciate if anyone familiar with the area could share their knowledge!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights into the finance scene in various cities, which might help you understand the opportunities in Seattle:

  1. Chicago:

    • Industrials, Healthcare, Consumer and Retail: Opportunities within these sectors.
    • Firms: Goldman (mostly S&T but some industrials bankers), JPM (industrials, consumer and retail), Citi (industrials and healthcare), Baird (industrials).
  2. Richmond, VA:

    • Middle Market Firms: Investment banks like Harris/Williams, Matrix, and private equity firms like Boxwood Capital, Blue Heron.
    • Challenges: Lack of experience in the finance sector can be a barrier, and bulge bracket banks' associate programs are typically in NYC, Atlanta, and San Francisco.
  3. Montreal:

    • Language Barrier: Potential issue in IB/PE/HF positions.
    • Compensation and Exits: Information on these aspects is sought after.
    • City Appeal: Known for nightlife, food, and lower cost of living.
  4. General Advice for Relocation:

    • Geography: Consider NY, SF, Boston, or other locations.
    • Sector: Be clear on your target sector (industrials, healthcare, tech, consumer).
    • Strategy: Know your preferred strategy (VC, growth, buyout, special situations, operationally-focused, financial engineering-focused).
    • Preparation: Be ready to explain your choices and know your finance and accounting technicals inside and out.

While Seattle is not explicitly mentioned in the provided context, the general advice and insights from other cities can be applied. Seattle's finance scene may indeed be dominated by tech, but there could be niche opportunities in sectors like healthcare or consumer goods. Networking and leveraging your background in RX at PJT/EVR/HL could open doors in specialized finance roles within the region.
